How to Wear Horizontal Stripes

Let’s talk about the trending horizontal stripes. So often I hear one of the most common tips for women of shorter height is to wear vertical lines, with an emphasis on only vertical lines. When worn correctly, vertical lines are a great way to elongate and add an illusion of height. In addition, when worn correctly, petites can also wear horizontal lines when done strategically!

So can petites wear horizontal stripes? Absolutely! Here’s a few tips to elongate your look:

  • Choose narrow horizontal stripes. As seen above, narrowly spaced lines keep the eye moving up and down. This adds the illusion of height to a shorter figure. Avoid widely spaced and bold horizontal lines as they draw the eye across, shortening and widening a shorter figure.

  • Irregular stripes with a mix of half an inch with one inch stripes is better than choosing a piece with bold wide stripes that are 3 inches wide.

  • Create a continuous line of color - like monochromatic dressing. This tricks the eye into one continuous visual and keeps the eye moving in one direction. If possible, add a focal piece up near your shoulders so the eye moves up - if the attention goes up, the wearer looks taller.

  • As mentioned before, add interest at the neckline. This can include a necklace, buttons leading to a collar, or contrasting color at the neckline or shoulders.

  • Choose stripes in low-contrast colors, such as tan/cream/beige or heather/blue/gray.

  • Wear a longer 3rd layer piece (jacket, cardigan, coatigan, coat). This creates a dominant vertical line in the outfit. The thin horizontal stripes underneath the layered piece are subordinate and if thin enough, the eye continues to travel up and down.
